THE URGENT NEED FOR A RETHINK Further analysis of how a local Bishop responded when presented with our website details: 'Your web site is impressive however I am not sure you need a campaign' Basically she is declaring that, in her view, maintaining the status quo where people, including the clergy, do not know what to make of the Genesis account, and the C of E at all levels studiously avoids focussing on it in church services, is not in any way undesirable or problematic. In essence it doesn't matter whether you doubt the existence of a Creator God, or whether you believe the Genesis account is a myth, because Neo-Darwinism or some other invention of man may be a better explanation anyway for the origin of life! This attitude from a senior member of the clergy is hard to comprehend, but she is not alone in adopting it judging by the fact that only a few members of the clergy out of thousands of visits from them have used our front page data logger to affirm belief in a Creator. How can she imply it really is of little consequence therefore doesn't need pursuing? What we believe in the area of origins is surely fundamental to who we are as Christians, or am I failing to understand what Christianity is all about? So I suggest the question the church should answer is, 'Does it matter to society how life arose on our planet, and does what we believe have any bearing on our relationship with God!' May we be so bold as to suggest that if a member of the clergy, or anyone else, disputes the word of God as laid down in Genesis, God would be unable to establish or maintain a proper relationship with him or her, and ultimately this would lead to disengagement. Our relationship with God is not dissimilar in some regard to our relationship with our fellow human beings. If trust is lost, relationships fade, and ultimately cease to exist. The Church continuing on the path of ambivalence will likely lead to a progressive decline in the faith, and may ultimatly result in its demise. People look to the clergy for inspiration, guidance, and a willingness to tackle difficult moral issues, not for them to look the other way and pretend they dont exist. Declining Church attendance is not a myth either if reports in the press are anything to go by. The C of E needs to do something about this issue now rather than bury its head in the sand and hope it will go away, which it wont! No dialogue has been established between us and the Church despite our best efforts to create one.
