Arguments against the existence of God

This section has been added to reveal the extent of anti-God sentiments prevalent in society today revealed by author and atheist Christopher Hitchens. Oxford University Mathematics professor John Lennox who is an ardent believer in christianity expresses his views on the existence of God which are clearly at odds with those of Christopher Hitchens. You may be wondering what this has to do with our aim of providing convincing evidence for Creationism. This is easily answered because if there is no God, there could not have been an act of creation therefore intelligent design (ID) ceases to be a viable explanation for the origin of all life. ID requires a supremely intelligent designer, namely God. We start with Christopher Hitchens views on God. In the video below he lists his reasons for believing God is non-existent, or if He does exist then He is a cruel, callous incompetent designer. Here are some of his arguments:

1) 99.9% of all species that have ever existed have become extinct due at least in part to rampant deadly diseases. This he argues is evidence that life forms were not created by a caring intelligent God.
Comment: This claim is based on belief that the Earth has been in existence supporting life for billions of years, and during that time, countless species have emerged, thrived, and eventually disappeared. We accept the Biblical time line of thousands of years and if correct renders this argument nonsensical. Also at least some of these diseases were brought on by deviant human behaviour and careless regard for fellow human beings. e.g. HIV Aids.

2) The fact that human beings had a life expectancy of around 20 to 30 years, often suffering from terrible diseases in the distant past is evidence that the notion of the existence of a loving God is purely mythological.
Comment: It is true that Life expectancy at birth was relatively low in the distant past, typically ranging between 20 to 30 years, due to high infant mortality rates. in Ancient Egypt life expectancy was around 22 to 35 years for example. Life expectancy in the early 1900's was around 47 years. This doesn't provide evidence for the non-existence of God. This life expectancy was the norm before modern medicine began to increase longevity. It is not proof that there is no God.

3) Wars between nations and societal cruelty with (the non-existent) God taking no action to alleviate the suffering.
Comment: How this can be used as evidence for a non-existent God is difficult to grasp. The human race has suffered from such wicked deviances since the fall. The Bible makes this crystal clear. God cannot intervene to stop these practices without revealing His presence. If He were to appear before us in person and intervene the consequences would be devastating. (explained in the section on our relationship with God: God sets the rules)

4) Threats to life outside of our control such as lightning strikes.
Comment: Loss of life due to such occurences is rare and minimal and would not entail prolonged suffering.

In conclusion we brought most of these problems on ourselves by rejecting God at the fall. He wanted nothing but good for us but we wanted to go our own deviant and rebellious way abandoning the protection on offer.

5) Incompetent designer:
Comment: Nothing could be further from the truth. What has been revealed in recent years residing in the cells of every living organism, including plants is proof beyond any doubt that life in all its glory was designed by a supreme architect. His argument seems to hinge on the fact that we all have to die and sometimes in umpleasant circumstances. Many people who die from old age are ready for the inevitable as they are relieved of any suffering that accompanies their failing body. If we all lived disease free lives for ever the World would rapidly become inhabitable due to shortages of food, space, etc. Wars would inevitably proliferate.

6) He watches our suffering and does nothing:
Comment: How did Christopher Hitchens reached this conclusion? One suspects that God is very aware of proceedings down on Earth and takes appropriate action where necessary to prepare for forthcoming events. We cannot know what horrors would have ensued if He hadn't operated behind the scenes in advance to lessen the effects of man's misdemeanors and bad decision making at some future point. The fact that He accomplishes such activities unseen on a minute by minute basis is proof of His immense power and intellect. The notion that God operates behind the scenes undetected should come as no surprise. Much of what takes place continuously in the proximity of an individual and inside the body throughout life happens without his or her full cognisance due to the limitations of the brain and the senses, so we are not well equipped to judge, or be aware of, the full extent of the ongoing work of the Almighty in and around us. This accords with the omnipresent attribute of God.
Christopher H will now know the truth since he left to be with his maker in December 2011. Wouldn't it be great if those who had passed away could send an email or a WhatsApp message from Heaven containing the truth to those left behind ! One wonders if even this would convince the doubting Thomas's of this World!

The dangers of doubting God's existence

Sadly there is a tendency for all of us to 'bury our heads in the sand' when we are confronted with difficult issues to avoid appearing at odds with mainstream views. The existence of a divine authority whom we should bow down to is such an issue facing all of us on a daily basis.

1) The outcome of our rejection is that we fail to ask God for help except perhaps in dire situations. There is much evidence from history that God will intervene and help us if we ask Him but clearly we need to acknowledge His existence in advance.

2) We go our own God refuting way because we want to be in control of our lives. This is understandable and God allows for this. The problem with this approach is that we spend most of our life focussing on material, mundane issues giving little thought to the important question of where we originated from, and where will our final destination be.

3) We fall foul of God refuting ideologies that do not accept or recognise the rules of life set down in the Bible. This can lead to a troubled existence where the rules of engagement with one another and society at large are made up to suit the occasion. This is not normally a happy state of affairs, certainly not in the long run.

Finally, there is every reason to think most people believe there is a God but are loath to talk about it or admit their belief to others. It has become a taboo subject for many of us, even amongst church goers. One tends to keep ones thoughts on this issue to oneself, regarding it as a personal matter. Christianity is not a hot topic of conversation in the public domain. This is clearly less true amongst other religions.

Professor Lennox arguing the case for God from a scientific perspective

1) Evils done in the name of God: The professor points out that society needs to distinquish between the greatness of God and the inexcusable evil that has been done by those professing His name. He disputes the claim by Hitchens that religion poisons everything. On the other hand he says with justification that atheism has poisoned everything. The evidence for this is in abundance, Hitler, Stalin, and many others throughout history were all God deniers and perpetuated evil on a grand scale.
Comment: President Putin is a cased in point. He has rallied Patriarch Kirill of Moscow a leader of the Russian Orthodox Church to his side to justify his evil warmongering. Kirill is clearly not in reality a man of God as he is in cahoots with Putin to feather his own nest.

2) When Newton discovered the Law of Gravity he didn't regard this as evidence that God does not exist. He didn't say, "now I know how the Universe works I don't need God". His wonder at how it was done increased his admiration for the creator who had done it that way. Newton wrote the most famous scientific treatise of all time, 'The Principia Mathematica' in the hope that it would pursuade the thinking man to believe in the deity.
Comment: His endeavours produced fruit in that most people until recent times believed whole heartedly in a Creator God. Sadly many of todays scientists think mankind has all the answers through advances in their discipline, God becomes redundant and belief in Him is abandoned believing it to be out-of-date ramblings from lesser mortals back in mankinds early history. We know better now. God is relegated and regarded as a relic of the past. Reality is the opposite, namely that God is an explanation for the miracle of our entire existence.

3) Far from declaring God is not great as Christopher Hitchens opines the very opposite is the case. It was belief in God that motivated the advance of science in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Comment: God gave us the ability to understand scientific elements of His creation. The theory of evolution has unravelled as new discoveries in molecular biology and related disciplines have brought the truth to light.

This is only a small subset of the excellent arguments put forward by Professor Lennox to help combat the anti-God arguments of atheists in the youTube video above. Powerful reasoning clearly impressed his listeners.

The Glory of God's Creation

1. Creation sings the Father's song.
He calls the sun to wake the dawn
And run the course of day
'Til evening falls in crimson rays.
His fingerprints in flakes of snow,
His breath upon this spinning globe;
He charts the eagle's flight;
Commands the newborn baby's cry.

Refrain:
Hallelujah!
Let all creation stand and sing, "Hallelujah!"
Fill the earth with songs of worship, tell the wonders of creation's King.

2. Creation gazed upon His face;
The ageless One in time's embrace
Unveiled the Father's plan
Of reconciling God to man.
A second Adam walked the earth,
Whose blameless life would break the curse,
Whose death would set us free
To live with Him eternally.

3. Creation longs for His return,
When Christ shall reign upon the earth;
The bitter wars that rage
Are birth pains of a coming age.
When He renews the land and sky,
All heav'n will sing and earth reply
With one resplendent theme:
The glory of our God and King!
