God's angels

The importance of angels

Angels are not exactly a hot topic of conversation at any level in western society despite the fact that God has provided them as our main interface with His heavenly realm and they are ever-present.
Angels are an integral part of the bible, illustrating God's sovereignty, justice, and care for His creation. They are reminders of the spiritual realm and the never ending battle between good and evil. While angels are revered for their interfacing role, worship is reserved for God alone, as emphasized in Revelation 22:8-9, where John is instructed not to worship angels but to worship God alone.

An obvious question is, 'is it feasible to believe in the existence of God, yet reject the notion of angels?'. How important are they to our earthly existence? Why do they only appear to a relatively small number of people? If they are merely figments of imagination why do these experiences have such a positive, lifelong, impact on chosen peoples lives thereafter? Why do angels exist, surely God could function perfectly well without them? How are they able to pop in and out of a physical existence and operate autonomously when in our presence?

It is difficult for mere human beings to convincingly answer any of these questions, especially the latter one. God alone has the answer to them all and any human understanding will very from person to person. We suggest that the story of angels is the single most convincing evidence of the existence of God and His heavenly realm, so we should be in awe of them, and try to appreciate their significance in our lives rather than giving them little thought. There is reason to believe they play a largely hidden but very active overlooking role in the life of each one of us, intervening only when absolutely necessary, usually when we are in dire straits. The fact that God has provided angels to care for us is evidence that we are indeed His special creation! We should appreciate how obedient the angels are in their calling, and their desire to carry out God's wishes, standing by us in exceptional times of need! They have never been known to follow instructions issued by people. We are either too astounded by their sudden appearance, or unaware of their presence until after they have completed their task, so interacting with them when briefly in our company is never possible. They have a task to perform, and they carry it out flawlessly and in double quick time. Sometimes they appear in angelic form but at other times adopt a human persona. They are clearly not dependent on us in any way for their existence and actions, and operate according to God's instructions using powers supplied by Him.

The book, 'Angels' by author Hope Price dating back to 1995 contains numerous accounts of peoples experiences of angels impacting their lives. We have chosen to summarise one such moving account as an illustration of the remarkable and impactful nature of Hope's book:

"In 1930, a much-loved, pretty little girl was dying of tuberculosis. Her schoolfriend who grew up in the same village, Lenham near Maidstone, Kent, wrote to tell Hope about her. Her name was Pretoria Green and the ten-year-old was such a kind and gentle child that her death was a great shock to her entire school. It was customary then to keep the open coffin in a downstairs room from the death until the funeral, so friends and neighbours could come to the house to pay their last respects. Schoolfriends were all amazed that her face looked so radiant and smiling. Pretoria's mother then told the children of her last words just before she passed away. 'Oh, Mummy, everything is ever so beautiful and bright. I can see many lovely flowers and the angels are singing. Mummy, it's wonderful.'"

The story above amongst many others in Hope Price's book provides its readers with true hope of salvation. The fact that angels are able to transmute between spiritual and physical form should be a source of comfort to us all. It demonstrates that there can be life after death and that it is possible to interchange our existence between spiritual and material forms, in their case with ease.

Angels by Hope Price

There is little room for doubting the testimonies of those claiming to have been visited by angels:

1) They do not flaunt their experiences.
2) They do not seek financial gain when reporting their experience.
3) They risk being ridiculed by doubting Thomases.
4) Their experiences invariably occur just once in their lifetime.
5) They are unable to offer a plausible, worldly explanation for their encounter.
6) Over generations thousands of people have reported Angel encounters usually reporting them only to close family members.

The evidence is overwhelming that the accounts describe real encounters and that the people reporting them are honest, reliable witnesses.

Biblical truths

References to angels in the Bible:

Number recorded: The words "angel", "cherubim" and "seraphim" are mentioned 365 times in the Bible.

Should we believe in the existence of angels?:

Absolutely! We know that angels surrounded Jesus' birth, resurrection, and later ascension. He was also ministered to by angels in the wilderness and strengthened by an angel in Gethsemane (Matt. 4:11; Lk. 22:43). If Jesus Himself received the ministry and assistance of angels - how much more so should we?

Most noticeable angel activities:

1. Messengers of God:
Angels frequently serve as intermediaries between God and humans. For example, the angel Gabriel announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah (Luke 1:11-20) and the birth of Jesus to Mary (Luke 1:26-38).

2. Protectors and Guides: Angels are often seen providing protection and guidance to believers. Psalm 91:11 states, "For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." In Acts 12:7, an angel frees Peter from prison, demonstrating their role in caring for God's people.

Angels never die (Luke 20:36). They possess superhuman intelligence and power (Mark 13:32; 2 Thessalonians 1:7; Psalm 103:20). They are called "holy" (Luke 9:26), "elect" (1 Timothy 5:21). The redeemed in glory are "like unto the angels" (Luke 20:36). However they are not to be worshipped (Colossians 2:18; Revelation 19:10).

The Glory of God's Creation

1. Creation sings the Father's song.
He calls the sun to wake the dawn
And run the course of day
'Til evening falls in crimson rays.
His fingerprints in flakes of snow,
His breath upon this spinning globe;
He charts the eagle's flight;
Commands the newborn baby's cry.

Refrain:
Hallelujah!
Let all creation stand and sing, "Hallelujah!"
Fill the earth with songs of worship, tell the wonders of creation's King.

2. Creation gazed upon His face;
The ageless One in time's embrace
Unveiled the Father's plan
Of reconciling God to man.
*A second Adam walked the earth,
Whose blameless life would break the curse,
Whose death would set us free
To live with Him eternally.

3. Creation longs for His return,
When Christ shall reign upon the earth;
The bitter wars that rage
Are birth pains of a coming age.
When He renews the land and sky,
All heav'n will sing and earth reply
With one resplendent theme:
The glory of our God and King!
